Book Review "Pure as a Tear" and "Rio Bar";
During the holiday season, sometimes it's worth reaching out for easier reading. Then crime fiction is usually a good solution. This time, my choice fell on the book by Charlene Harris, "Pure as a Tear." I was advised to reach it by a fragment of the work read by Anna Tseslak, posted on the website of the publishing house "Sign".
Lily Bard looks like a very strong and determined woman, but sometimes appearances can be deceiving. In fact, she is an incredibly wounded girl who is trying to recover from the traumatic events of the past by taking martial arts classes. It's not easy, given her difficult nature and, above all, her temperamental nature. She considers herself a person who, having a very responsible job as a cleaner, must be extremely restrained, because because of the nonsense of her employers, she often knows more about it than they themselves want to tell her. Unfortunately, Lilly has an amazing ability to get into trouble even in a small town like Shakespeare.
One night, a girl walks in the park. Suddenly she sees that someone has the audacity to steal her trash can and drag it somewhere. Lily, in a sudden outburst of anger and curiosity, decides to go after the villain. A short time later, she discovers the man's body. From that moment on, the cleaner becomes a detective who must find the killer before the police accuse her of committing a crime.
I admit that for me, "Pure as a Tear" is not primarily a criminal story, but rather a psychological novel, because a lot of attention is paid to the emotions of the main character, through whose eyes we see the whole story. True, the character is annoyingly annoying at times, but it adds authenticity to it. The rest of the people are also colorful and diverse, which makes the story extremely exciting. The riddle itself is, of course, an important point in the plot, and it completes it, ensuring that anyone who loves riddles will not be disappointed.
Book Review "Rio Bar"
The prose of the big exclamation mark. The prose of the index finger blamed the enemy, the government, the world, God, and finally itself. The narrator in Saiko's novel spits verbal poison, her emotions seethe, boil and explode. And although the Balkan cauldron has cooled down over the years, the author tells her to stir it, this time in her memories to sprinkle salt on the eyes of those who have already forgotten or do not want to remember her.
When war broke out in her homeland of Croatia, she danced at her wedding. The political settlements she didn't know about took everything from her in an instant. She was left alone with her grotesque lace wedding dress against the backdrop of an ash-strewn state. The war had robbed her of her happiness, her husband, and her first wedding night. The war meant that it was neither long nor happy.
"The first alarm siren drowns out the dance music. Waltz. We hang around laughing bridesmaids and drunken grooms. Rosemary on the lapel tickles my nose. The melody changes dramatically. Sirens? The sirens!!!. Probably not... Probably not... After the third repeat, it disappears from my hands. The groom lies torn to pieces around me. And he's still laughing."
She was forced into a tight shelter; she killed in the most brutal way to survive; she listened to the sounds of love in refugee camps, waiting in vain for her lost lover. She survived, she survived, but what kind of life is this among the ruins of the city and her own dreams? For them, it is an expressive epitaph over the grave, sung in the voice of a suffering Croatian woman. Safety should never be compromised for a bonus.
